Valley Oaks Center for Enriched Studies is a SPAN school serving students in 6th through 12th grade.

College and Career Competitive

Students will graduate globally minded, college and career competitive students through the exploration of community and global issues. The enriched interdisciplinary curriculum will foster innovative problem-solving and critical thinking skills that will nurture multiple perspectives and identities. The curriculum will also require students to apply knowledge and skills to real world situations affecting the surrounding and global community through projects and service learning.

Enrichment

Outside of the classroom, learning opportunities will be enriched through partnerships with community organizations and businesses where students will develop as leaders, network, explore career pathways, and further their understanding of concepts learned in the classroom. Inside the classroom, teachers will enrich the students’ experiences through the practice of culturally responsive pedagogy incorporating philosophies from California’s Social and Emotional Learning Guiding Principles, the Teaching Tolerance’s Social Justice Standards, and The Recommended Standards for Programs for Gifted and Talented Students.

Empowerment

These philosophies and standards address the social-emotional needs of students and allow them to strengthen executive functioning skills related to flexibility, task initiation, time management, goal setting, collaboration, and organization.

Furthermore, culturally responsive pedagogy and the practice of restorative circles will increase student engagement, build healthy self-images, and foster a strong classroom community. Social-emotional skills, the social justice framework, and interdisciplinary applied learning about community and global needs will be taught across the curriculum as students master key academic skills. Students will feel empowered to meet academic standards that will develop them into competitive college applicants with the 21st century skills to become college graduates and career professionals.
